We all know that most successful people or companies have clear and inspiring missions and visions. Interestingly, they also have a set of values that they live by. These values make their success long-lasting and legacy profound.
Here are some examples of success and their top values. You will notice these people and companies not only use values to guide their actions but over time they reflect these values as an integral part of their brand, their legacy:
Benjamin Franklin: temperance, silence, order
Mahatma Gandhi: non-violence, compassion, truth
Elon Musk: optimism, action, persistence
Apple: simplicity, focus, impact
Google: focus, quality, speed
Microsoft: innovation, diversity, social responsibility
Obvious question is: what are yours?
Even if one studies utterly failed companies or hopeless humans, one will notice they lack good values as one of the key failure criteria (KFC)!
So, pause, and ask yourself:
-
- What is your mission and vision?
-
- What values are driving your actions and guiding your journey?
-
- How will you measure your success? And what legacy would it lead to?
We all live multiple personas and lives: personal, professional, and family/social. It might be worthwhile to think of values that you want to live by in each of these spheres. And to avoid getting overwhelmed you can simply leverage existing resources. Here is a list of 29 values to live by. And here is a list of some important organizational values that you can repurpose.
The most important question is … What values do you live by???
